Hi Bixie Fam,
This week we thought we'd take the opportunity to chat about a topic that may seem a tad un-glamorous, but is something we've all dealt with!
While it may be a subject we’re embarrassed to talk about, all of us have experienced dandruff from time to time. It’s irritating, itchy, and worst of all, it makes us want to duck and cover to hide our hair.
As unfortunate as dandruff can be, it is usually the result of very treatable scalp conditions. Today, we’re going to dive into what can feel like a TMI subject, but is important to discuss - we’ve all been there! But if you’re ready to say goodbye to an itchy, upset scalp, check out our tips below.
Most of us may have noticed a more irritated than usual scalp during lockdown. This can be attributed to a number of factors, the primary being that we’re not spending as much time outside of home, so we’re not washing our hair as regularly.
For blondes or other colour-treated hair gals, this could also be the cause of your colour treatment shampoo! While colour assistive shampoos and conditioners can be our best friends in between salon visits, we are all experiencing serious regrowth at the moment, and these products may be too heavy now on our natural hair.
The 2 most common scalp conditions are:
- Dry Scalp
Many of us will experience dry scalp from time to time, most commonly in the winter months. When our scalps become dry, the skin begins to flake off.
This can also be caused when we use products that are too heavy. If you are experiencing a dry or irritated scalp, try purchasing a cleansing shampoo, which is equipped to provide a light but thorough cleanse and will alleviate your head from itching.
But what is the difference between a dry scalp and dandruff?
When it comes to dandruff vs dry scalp, the origins of these conditions will help you to differentiate between the two. Moreover, this will allow you to find the right treatment for you.
When it comes to dry scalp, dry skin is the culprit. Just like we sometimes experience dry skin on our bodies and need to moisturise it, the same goes for our scalp. While the skin may flake lightly as a result of a dry scalp, it is no where near the consistency of dandruff.
Products we recommend for Dry Scalp:
- R+Co Crown Scalp Scrub
- R+Co Spiritualised Dry Shampoo Mist
- Oribe Serene Scalp Collection
2. Dandruff
Dandruff is a common skin problem that occurs year-round. Typically characterised by large flakes that may cling to your hair or clothing, dandruff is caused by dead skin cells building into clusters on the surface of the scalp. Once large enough, they will eventually become visible and fall from your head.
With dandruff, we want to eliminate an oily scalp, as over-production of sebum can cause the skin cells to die off and form these dandruff clusters.
Products we recommend for Dandruff:
- R+Co Skyline Dry Shampoo
- Oblivion Shampoo and Conditioner
- Oribe Serene Scalp Collection
All R+Co and Oribe products are suitable for both these common scalp issues, as they are dermatologically tested and keratin-treatment safe.
If you have any further questions about this issue, please feel free to reach out on our socials @BixieColour or to any of our stylists for further info.
All our love and happy washing,
Team Bixie xx
